In this course, we analyze the interaction between Brazilian cultural productions and the environment. The class begins by reflecting upon the environmental humanities, ecocriticism and their methods of research and upon topics like the Anthropocene and environmental justice. We will then turn to central areas of environmental thought in Brazil, including the Amazon Rainforest and the drought-ridden Northeast. Representative cultural productions will serve as a springboard for a discussion of how the environment has shaped Brazilian culture and, in turn, how the arts can contribute to ongoing discussions about environmental issues.
