Another History of the Lost Cities of the Amazon: Development and Utopia in Contemporary Brazil
Danielle Heberle Viegas | Munich Centre for Global History
This lecture analyses the emergence and disappearance of cities in the Brazilian Amazon throughout the 20th century in the context of a technical-authoritarian urbanization model and of developmentalist policies. On the one hand, the talk examines how the discourse on the bankruptcy of these cities mobilizes some of the stereotypes associated with the tropical forest, such as the “green hell”. On the other hand, it looks at their socio-environmental resilience and relativizes the idea of abandonment.
